DON'T GO ON

We didn't say "can't."  We said "won't."  When we get to be over fifty, we tend to be just a little bit set in our ways. This might be a good time to stop and reflect for a few days.  Are you really all that interested in slowing down the natural progression of life?   It will take sustained commitment.  If you make up your mind to see it through, it won't be nearly as difficult as you might imagine.  If you're only lukewarm about the whole thing, it will be impossible.  Think about it and come back.

Now that you're back, pick one of your bad habits and cut it out!  You know what they are.  Pick the easiest  bad habit to shake and do it.  Expect it to take some time.  But keep at it and pretty soon your habits will change and you'll stop missing that bad habit.  For instance, switch from coffee to tea.  Believe it or not, if you get used to drinking tea, you'll prefer it over coffee.  There. You did it!  You've just ditched a bad habit.

Pick another bad habit.  Take all the time you need, but always keep working on that lifestyle change, a little at a time.  Your habits will take over and  pretty soon your bad habits will turn to good ones and you won't even notice that you've actually been making a lifestyle change  after a while.  And already, you'll start feeling better.  Soon you won't want to go back to your old ways.  Honest. It works that way!  And remember.  This is critical. It's basic to everything else.  All the "miracle breakthroughs" in the world won't help you if you don't accomplish this one little thing.  A meaningful lifestyle change.  If you don't do that; if you simply, for instance, go on a diet, you won't maintain it.  You'll either get disgusted and quit, or, when you've reached your goal, you'll revert to your old ways again.  You must achieve a permanent  lifestyle change!

Pick a meal.  Any meal you normally eat.  Breakfast, lunch, dinner; it's not important.  Go ahead and eat it.  Don't worry about what it is you're eating.  Eat.  Then don't eat anything else - nothing - until the next, same meal.  That is, if you picked lunch, don't eat again until lunch again next day.  If you wake up in the morning ravenously hungry and unwilling to wait for lunch, go ahead and have breakfast.  Only then, don't eat anything - nothing, until next morning.  What we're doing here is getting you accustomed to eating one meal a day.  It will take a while getting used to.  And let nothing - nothing - pass your lips between meals.

GET A JUICER!

(If you decide to make breakfast your flagship meal, then it's ok to have bacon & eggs a couple of times a week - you need to keep up your morale while you're suppressing all your natural instincts, after all.)  Just don't ever forget the vegetable juice, and if you're really really hungry and can't stand it any longer, eat an apple, orange, banana, kiwi, or whatever appeals to you in that category of food.  But again - stay away from the soft drinks!  And NO HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP!  IT'S POISON!

We're not giving you recipes here.  Eat what appeals to you, but get away from sugar.  If you need a sweetener, use Xylitol.  It has half the calories of sugar, it's safe for diabetics, and it's good for your teeth.  We're not going to tell you to switch to tea if you're drinking coffee now, but it would be a good idea to consider it later on.  Tea is simply better for you.  And get away from the junk food.  Avoid the processed stuff.  Read the labels.  Anything containing high fructose corn syrup is absolute taboo.  Start eating wholesome, natural foods.

STOP THE BOOZE
(For Now)

Don't drink any hard liquor at this stage of the game.  If you go to a party, drink club soda and be the only sober person in a room full of drunks.  You'll have an interesting experience.  It's OK to fall off your regimen and eat what's there.  If you gain any weight from this little excursion it will come right off again as you get back into your routine.  Just don't party every night!   And stay with one meal a day supplemented with vegetable juice drunk separately at another time.
