BIG PHARMA'S BRIBERY OF DOCTORS THREATENED
The IInstitute of Medicine (IOM) has called on medical professionals, from university professors to family doctors, to stop accepting goodies from parmaceutical and medical equipment and supply companies. This is a practice that has flourished for the past thirty years. Dr Bernard Lo, chairman of the IOM stated that taking free lunches from salespeople and giving paid lectures on companies' behalf erode public trust while providing no meaningful benefit to patients or society. In a 353 page document document, the (IOM) calls on medical schools, hospitals, and physicians to publicly report funding from companis, stop accepting free gifts, meals, or other items from companies, discontinue testing new therapies on people when a doctor has a financial conflict of interest.
The American Medical Association has reluctantly been taking some steps in phasing out company paid trips to luxury resorts, and Stanford University, the University of Pennsylvania, among other medical schools are beginning to disclose more about faculty conflicts of interest.
THEY'RE NOT DOING THIS OUT OF THE GOODNESS OF THEIR HEARTS EXACTLY! This comes on the heels of legislative investigations in which Senator Charles Grassley, R-Iowa uncovered a good number of questionable arrangements between leading researchers and drug companies. In one case, the chairman of Emory University's psychiatric department was removed after failing to report hundreds of thousands of dollars in payments from a company whose drugs he was studying. Similar payments to the head of Stanford University's psychiatry department have been uncovered.
Understandably, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturer's of America trade group is frantically trying to head off impending legislation detrimental to their marketing efforts by asking members to stop handing out mugs, pens, and other freebies in doctor's offices. This seems like a very tepid response to a very hot issue. Meanwhile, Senator Grassley, along with Senator Herb Kohl, D-Wis, are pushing a bill requiring companies to disclose all payments to physicians of $100.00 or more. Maybe we're on our way to something here. Time will tell.
MEDICARE TORPEDOES CARELESS PROVIDERS
1 October 2008: If you're on Medicare and your surgeon leaves a sponge in you after an operation, Medicare will no longer pay to have it removed. The rest of us will still have to pay for such careless mistakes. Medicare will also no longer pay for incompatible blood transfusions, and second operations that result from infections developing from the first. Serious bedsores, injuries from falls, and urinary tract infections caused by faulty catheter insertion have also made the no pay list.
Many major health insurers are following suit and refusing to pay for procedures and treatments that should never have been required with the rendering of properly conducted care in the first place. Historically there has been an acceptance in the health industry that mistakes happen. Nobody got too excited about it because the patient was always billed for the subsequent corrective treatment and everybody walked away happy. Well, maybe not the patient, but what the heck, there's plenty more of them. Doctors and hospitals rarely, if ever, accepted responsibility for their failings, which is what has helped make lawyers rich.
Over the past year, four state medicaid programs have begun refusing to pay for a long list of events that are never supposed to happen, and many other states are expected to follow suit. In response, a new focus on the reduction of medical errors is beginning to permeate the health industry. It's pretty sad when these caregivers, in whom we all place our trust, have to be hit in the wallet before they give due consideration for our safety.
DRUG ALERTS
AVANDIA! STOP TAKING IT! SEE YOUR DOCTOR! NOW! Several confidential government reports have come to light recommending that Avandia, used to treat type 2 Diabetes and labeled rosiglitazone, be removed from the market.
This drug has been linked to more than 300 deaths between October & December 2009. Dr David Graham and Dr Kate Gelperin of the Food & Drug Administration are urging its removal because of its dangerous propensity to cause heart attacks and heart failures. It is estimated that such events linked to Avandia number about 800 every month.
A similar pill, named Actos, shows promise of being a much better choice, since it doesn't seem to hurt the heart quite as much. Patients taking Avandia should ask their doctor about this immediately. More doctors are concluding daily that there is absolutely no reason for anyone to be taking this drug.
STOP USING HYDROXYCUT This Canadian supplement, widely used by dieters and bodybuilders has been linked to serious liver damage and at least one death and two liver transplants. It has not yet been determined which Hydroxycut ingredients are potentially toxic. Questions about at least one ingredient, hydroxycitric acid, have been raised.
Dietary supplements aren't as tightly regulated as medications. Manufacturers don't need to prove to the FDA that their products are safe, but in recent years they have been subjected to stricter requirements to alert the FDA when they learn of problems. AVANDIA ALERT: The FDA has just released information concerning a potential safety issue related to Avandia, a drug approved for type 2 diabetes. Recently the manufacturers of Avandia provided the FDA with a pooled analysis of 42 randomized clinical trials which seem to indicate that short term (6 months) treatment with Avandia may pose a 30m to 40 percent greater risk of heart attack or other heart diseases. DIGITEK: The FDA has issued a Class 1 recall of DIGITEK. A defect in the product could expose users to twice the amount of active ingredient, having the potential of causing serious or fatal reactions.
COLCHYS: This drug can kill you! Just approved by the FDA for the prevention and treatment of Gout. Another validation to our contention that the FDA is just a rubber stamp for Big Pharma.
The generic name of this drug is colchicine. The FDA has found 169 deaths linked to colchidine. It appears that Colchys can react very badly with a host of other drugs, among them Lipitor, Prilosec, Prozac, and Imodium, increasing the risk of potentially fatal colchine toxicity dramatically. SEROQUEL: (an anti-psychotic drug). Astra-Zeneca, Britain's second largest drug maker is being sued by nearly 10,000 people in the U.S. over claimed injuries arising from defects in the company's drug Seroquel. Claims made include the company and its affiliates promoted the drug or unapproved uses and failed to warn of possible side effects, including severe weight gain and risk of diabetes.
FORADIL, SEREVENT: Government health advisers have notified the FDA that Foradil and Serevent should no longer be used to treat asthma. Each contains an ingredient that relaxes muscles around stressed airways. But that may mask symptoms that can trigger life threatening asthma attacks.
OSMOPREP and VISICOL; COLONOSCOPY PREP COLON CLEANSERS: The FDA has issued a black box warning for both these drugs. This has managed somehow to stay out of the spotlight but anyone in line for a colonoscopy needs to be aware of the danger of these drugs. They have been linked to permanent kidney damage. The damage these drugs, which contain sodium phosphate, can do is permanent and irreparable! They can set up a patient for a lifetime of dialysis and other complications. If you are getting a colonoscopy, ask your doctor for a different pre-procedure colon cleanser such as Miralax, Colyte, or Trilyte.
GARDASIL: Keep your daughters away from it! Thanks to Big Parma Merck, with politicians in its pocket, misguided, misinformed, and desperate parents have come to believe that this vaccine saves lives. It does NOT! Gardasil has not been shown to prevent cervical cancer and all the young girls being vaccinated with it are simply guinea pigs in Merck's long term trials of a demonstrably useless product. Meanwhile there have been 11,916 adverse events reported by the FDA and another 580 severe reactions recorded by the CDC. Thirty-two girls have died, most of them as a result of blood clots caused by the vaccine. This vaccine is to be avoided at all cost. Regular pap smears have reduced cervical cancer rates by 75%.
ENBREL, REMICADE, HUMIRA, CUNZIA. All these drugs are taken by injection. In September of 08, the FDA issued strong warnings that taking tem can raise the risk of possibly fatal fungal infections. These drugs, generally given to treat rheumatoid arthritis, work by suppressing the immune sustem. But these drugs also lower the body's defenses against other infections. Many doctors seem to be overlooking a kind of fungal infection called histoplasmosis. Of 240 patients reported to the FDA in which patients taking one of these drugs developed this infection, 45 died. That's about twenty percent.
The infection, which mimics the flu, is prevalent in the middle part of the country and it can have grave consequences if not caught before it spreads beyond the respiratory system to other organs. If you are taking any of these drugs, call your doctor if you develop persistent fever, shortness of breath, or fatigue.
LYRICA - For Fibromyalgia (an FDA approved drug). Clinical trials have shown that Lyrica, which changes the way the brain pereceives pain improved only one in four study participants. Common side effects are dizziness, sleepiness, swelliing of hands anf feet, and weight gain. Other adverse effects include allergic reactions, vision changes, fever, muscle pain and weakness and confusion and concentration difficulties. There is even a warning that it should not be taken while driving or operating machinery.
Earlier this year, in 2008, the FDA Iissued an alert to health care providers that some anti-epileptic medications have been found to double the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Lyrica was on that warning list because it is also approved for the treatment of seizures, shingles, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. To top it off, this drug is a controlled substance with a potential for abuse.
CORDARONE, or PACERONE (generic name: AMIODARONE):In 2002 the FDA warned: If you are taking statins for cholesterol along with this heart rythm drug, you could be at risk for muscle damage. This information is even more important for patients taking more than 20 mg/day of cholesterol drugs.
NITROFURANTOIN, a prescription antibiotic commonly used to treat unriary tract infections. India's largest manufacturer, Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., has issued an immediate U.S. wide recall of this drug. In a statement by Ranbaxy, the capsules are "unlikely to produce any serious adverse health effects," though they may possibly increase the incidence of nausea and vomiting. That's from the Ranbaxy statement. Time will reveal what the real side effects will turn out to be. Check the label on your antibiotics and if it says "nitrofurantoin," get with your doctor NOW!
CIMZIA. a prescription drug, administered by injection and FDA approved for Crohn's Disease in April 2008, has just been approved (May 2009) for the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis. The first one announced that the FDA, in its typically whimpy fashion, was requiring a boxed warning that this drug carried extreme risks of life threatening infections, including bacterial sepsis, viral meningitis, invasive fungal disease, and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, also known as PML. This drug is a powerful immune suppressant and in the process will kill your liver and kidneys. It's a typical drug industry product designed to treat a single aspect of a disorder without regard for the rest of the complex biological system of the body. Another FDA coverup! Doctors pass it out to children like candy! The best thing this drug has ever done, if you can label this as "best," is cover up an underlying problem. The cause of a child's behavior may be rooted in autism and the disorder can remain undetected for years, denying the child of appropriate treatment. And that'snot the worst of it.
In an FDA study being vigorously suppressed by that agency, Ritalin has been linked to a staggering 600% increase in the risk of sudden death! Hasn't the FDA placed an immediate ban on the use of Ritalin? Of course not. Such an act would cut deeply into Pharma's profit picture.
LANTUS: Diabetes Drug Linked to Cancer. A study in Sweden involving 114,841 insulin-treated patients found that those on Lantus were nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer as those on human insulin. Likewise, a German study of 127,031 people found malignancies were more common in patients treated with Lanus as those on human insulin. The FDA as usual is hedging to protect its Big Pharma sponsors, and so is the American Diabetes Association. Patients should expect no help coming from that direction any time soon, so it would seem appropriate for anyone on Lantus to get switched over to natural insulin as soon as possible.
ACE INHIBITORS CITED AS DEATH DEALERS DURING BYPASS SURGERY! A current British study has established the distinct danger of death during bypass surgery for those patients taking Ace Inibitors as a means of controlling high blood pressure. The study recommends that patients taking Ace Inhibitors discontinue taking them at least two days before surgery and resume taking them a week or so after. Cancer Research has just published a study that found Tamoxifen Therapy responsble for 440% increase in the risk of developing estrogen receptor negative contralateral breast cancer. BLOOD TRANSFUSION DANGER
A recent study out of Duke University reveals that blood transfusions sharply increase the risk of heart attack and death. The reason appears to be in the length of time blood is stored. U. S. law allows blood banks to store blood for as long as 42 days. Stored blood begins to lose nitric oxide immediately and at the end of 42 days the amount of available nitric oxide is negligible and the blood is effectively unable to deliver oxygen to the tissues.
In fact, blood deficient in nitric oxidewill pull it out of the surrounding tissue. When this happens the tissue will constrict and become deoxygenated. When it happens to your heart tissue, you're dead!
The Duke University results have been confirmed by two other studies which emphasize the fact that blood stored more than 14 days is very dangerous and can add strokes to the list of complications.
It has been determined that patients receiving blood transfusions run a 25% chance of having a heart attack and an 8% chance of dying within a month of a blood transfusion. These statistics hold true for all patients receiving transfusions of stored blood, whether they are trauma victims, have suffered from heart attacks or anemia, or are undergoing chemotherapy.
With compatible fresh blood being a very scarce commodity, doctors, meaning well, have had no choice but to take their chances with stored blood.
Typically, The American Red Cross, the country's largest supplier of donated blood, has done nothing to adjust to these revelations, preferring to wait for the results of other studies to confirm the findings.

DR HANS NIEPER'S VIEWS ON DIABETES
Dr Hans Nieper, a man we can describe without fear of overstatement, as an intellectual ocean, is possibly the most thinking man in medicine. We are posting some his views on diabetes here as a direct excerpt fom his book, Revolution in Technology, Medicine, and Society.
The orthodox way of treating this disease...is the cause of many problems. [That is] to normalize the blood sugar level by ingestion of certain medications...or by injection of insulin. An appropriate diet is also prescribed. Certain supplements are also essential for a diabetes sufferer's optimal health.
Diabetic patients require larger quantities of zinc. They require magnesium carrier compounds and selenium because the larger and...the smaller arterial blood vessels can be severely damaged by diabetes, even if a "normal" glucose level is maintained. The patient also requires GTF, Glucose Tolerance Factor because like oats, it normalizes the glucose level by means of more thorough sugar burning, in order to prevent damage to blood vessels and nerves. GTF is a chromium compound....The same is true for fresh food high in fiber.

STREP THROAT
Children 5 to 12 years of age seem to be particularly vulnerable to strep throat, a painful bacterial infection of throat and often, tonsils that is usually accompanied by chills, headaches, nausea, and muscle aches. My grandfather, an old time country doctor cured it very efficiently every time, without medication of any kind.
My grandfather was not well thought of by his peers. He was well known for ignorig the conventional medical wisdom and applying his own inate common sense to cases that would normally be treated with some kind of a prescription. While other doctors often sneered, he was worshipped by his patients. He had an absolutely great bedside manner. And somehow, his patients would come to him sick and leave well, with other doctors grudgingly acknowledging that "you can't argue with success."
His treatment for strep throat was simple and infallible. It worked every time, without fail. He told the parents to eliminate all dairy foods from the child's diet! That meant milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese, and whatever else came from a cow or contained bovine ingredients. It was a formidable assignment for the parents, and of course the kids hated it, but the strep throat invariably disappeared, and stayed away. ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE SEEMS CURABLE
Current research is indicating that a ridiculously simple and effective treatment for Alzheimer's Disease is at hand. Will mainstream medicine embrace it? Probably not. Early results coming in show clearly that it works. According to the abstract of a recently published research report on nicotinamide, the substance restored cognitive defects associated with Alzheimer's Disease in mice. These are preclinical findings that suggest a safe and effective treatment for Alzheimer's Disease. Another name for nicotinamide is niacinamide, a type of vitamin B3. This supplement is commonly available in 500 and 1000 milligram tablets and capsules at most natural health food stores or compounding pharmacies. Niacinamide restores their function. Niacinamide has been safely used for many purposes for 60 years. It is inexpensive, safe, and produces very few adverse reactions. It's never too soon to begin dealing with Alzheimer's Disease, before the disease has progressed so far that irreversible damage has been done.
Niacinamide and Niacin are two different forms of vitamin B3. The major difference is that niacinamide does not produce the flush associated with niacin. In some instances, this flush is needed to treat certain health conditions. In the battle aainst Alzheimer'sDisease, this is not an issue.

Journal of the American Dental Association, March 1, 1944). The Journal goes on to admonish that "adding it to food or water for general use is beyond the practice of dentistry."
It is very important that in the consideration of dental caries, that this condition is only one of a large group of symptoms. When teeth are decaying, other things are going wrong in the body. Fluorine treatment cannot be a panacea for dental caries.

AN OLD FOLK REMEDY THAT SEEMS TO WORK VERY WELL
During the 1919 flu pandemic which killed 40 million people worldwide, a country doctor making house calls to every home in his community, found seriously ill patients in every home save one.
