PREVENTING AND REVERSING OSTEOPOROSIS
Alan R. Gaby, M.D.
Dr Gaby's book illustrates that treating the body as a whole in the treatment of osteoporosis will enable a myriad of other health benefits to be realized. Dr Gaby's treatment of osteoporosis centers around diet and supplements as well as certain hormones. Dr Gaby asserts that it is possible to obtain better results than the textbooks and "experts" say is possible.
Dr Gaby explores infinitely more than the calcium and Vitamin D protocols so widely acclaimed in TV commercials seen along with all the hyped up medications pushed by their manufacturers. Entire chapters are devoted to the nutrients and supplements involved in bone health. The book concludes with recommendations and an enlightened discussion on the various bone damaging aspects of modern life. Other aspects of women's health are also dealt with.
All in all, it's an interesting read, refreshing in its clarity with no compomise of scope and content. Something for everyone. Available from AMAZON.
COMMENTARY
The author provides the information needed to help prevent osteoporosis from happening in the first place. For women already diagnosed with this desease, the dietary and supplement recommendations offer a choice of action other than prescription medicines, which carry their own problems along with them and often do more harm than good. Judging by Dr Gaby's success with his own patients, I've had to conclude that nutritional solutions were the preferred approach to dealing with osteoporosis. I believe all women can benefit from this approach and we, all of us, should make this book an important cornerstone of our library. For a listing and explanation of the supplements mentioned in the book, go to the Supplements section here and click on the Special Osteoporisis Section in the INDEX. Betty...

COMPLETE GUIDE TO NATURAL HEALTH FOR DOGS & CATS
Richard H Pitcairn, DVM, PhD.
Susan Hubble Pitcairn
A work in two parts, Natural Health describes in Part I the holistic approach to maintaining the health of dogs and cats and treating their ailments. Emphasis is placed on nutritional needs, the best ways to obtain optimum nutrition for pets, home preparation vs buying commercial pet foods. An entire chapter is devoted to some of Dr Pitcairn's recipes.
Other topics include how to choose a pet, training, spaying and neutering counsel, caring for a sick animal at home and veterinary care. Dr Pitcairn also relates his experiences as both a vet and pet owner.
Part II, Quick Reference lists pet ailments, diseases and therapies; herbal, chiropractics, acupuncture, and homeopathic medicine, his specialty This reference work belongs on the bookshelf of every petowner seeking natural solutions to common and not so common pet health issues.
COMMENTARY
Dr Pitcain's Guide informs us in an anecdotal style more associated with folk tales than reference works. The effect makes for enjoyable reading, especially for those of us partial to animal stories. As a long time owner of cats - cats? owner? - I was fascinated by Dr Pitcain's discussion of cat training - cat training?
Dr Pitcairn's concern for pet health led him to learn about homeopathy, which often works where conventional means fail, even for humans.
The Quick Reference section on the other hand, is strictly cut and dried and scholarly in tone and style and very helpful when you need information in a hurry. This book is a keeper for me. Get it fromAMAZON. Betty...

HEALTHY HEALING
Linda Rector Page, N.D., PhD.
This big reference book covers a lot of ground. The author's hypothesis starts with the premise that the body heals itself if given the opportunity through proper diet and exercise which will counteract adverse conditions; such as exposure to disease and environmentary pollution. Dr Page goes on to say, "One in three are (sic) are using some form of complimentary medicine today." (Pge 9) The thought here is that if you know the cause of your illness you can both cure the condition and also prevent future occurences using the same treatment protocol.
In separate sections, Dr Page dicusses the various methods of alternative healing: Homeopathy, Naturopathy, and others. The essentials of good diet are explained as well as the importance of exercise. A section on alternative healing for pets is included (see also, Pitcairn, Natural Healing For Dogs & Cats). Included in the book is an alphabetial list of ailments with suggestions for healing each one.
COMMENTARY
I found the book's size and weight and format cumbersome, but informative once past the minor inconvenience; a good argument in favor of the Amazon Kindle Reader. I found one inaccuracy in the Ailments section. This emphasizes the need for the lay reader to check facts with a professional in the field. I found the explanation of the respective toles of LDL (bad) and HDL (good) cholesterol easy to understand. In general, the book provides a lot of material, some common knowledge, some reminiscent of other works, and some topics new to me. Some of the sources and protocols can come in handy, making the book a welcome addition to any library. The latest edition is available directly from the Healthy Healing website linked for you here [ 15% Off Healthy Healing Expanded 12th Edition. ]

The Alternative Cancer Therapy Book
Richard Walters, 1993
This book dicusses various theories and therapies in the field of Alternative Medicine for Cancer Treatment. The book offers a brief overview and guide to help cancer patients make an informed choice of treatment.
Chapters 2 through 29 cover individual therapies. Some are forms ofmedicine: homeopathy, ayurveda, and Chinese medicine. Others come from the ideas, research, and practices of individuals, physicians, and others who have had success in treating the disease. Most of these therapies feature dietary changes and vitamin, mineral, and herbal supplements. Each chapter features a resouce section for patients seeking information on individual therapies.
The author concludes with a discussion of the need for changes in the attitude toward alternative medicine; so that patients and their doctors can choose their own treatments without intereference and harassment from the authorities.
COMMENTARY
I like this book for the array of choices for its readers, cancer patients, and their families. Before cancer strikes, I, and others like me, would like to know our choices before we have to deal with this problem. It pays to avoid relying entirely on the decisions of of those who may not entirely have our best interests at heart.
With cancer reaching epidemic proportions in America, the timeliness of Options makes the book an important work. The text is clearly written in plain English, so that no one should have any difficulty in undersanding it. Available from Amazon Betty...

EVERYTHING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CHELATION THERAPY
Morton Walker, D.P.M.
Hitenda H. Shah, M.D.
With forward by Barry F. Gordon, M.D.
Past President; American College for the Advancement of Medicine (ACAM).
This book is a thorough discussion of all the aspects and uses of Chelation therapy, with a strong emphasis on its role in curing many diseases by reversing their pathology.
Intravenous Chelation Therapy provides a non-invasive means of clearing blood vessels large and small, versus angioplasty and heart/carotid bypass surgery which really are invasive! (You'll find the details on page 35). A wealth of case histories reveal all kinds of serious illnesses cured or vastly improved through chelation. " Grow bone while you clear your arteries" is not as far fetched as it seems (read page 65).
Women take note! Your skin wrinkles can be made smooth during treatment as well (read pages 66-67).
Chapter Eleven examines the uses of Oral Chelation, the more recent development. The book reads like a miracle and illustrates how far along we've come in the actual curing of heart disease.

COMMENTARY
Before you or a family member lay down for angioplasty or bypass surgery, READ THIS BOOK FIRST!! Don't allow the professional approach of the authors to discourage you. This book is a MUST READ before digging and cutting takes place. This book is important! The odds of all of us developing ahtherosclerosis are high, considering all the processed foods we're consuming these days. And no cardiologist will EVER prescribe chelation. I can personally attest to the efficacy of this procedure and no one in my family will ever be subjected to the ineffective and damaging surgical procedures that keep getting foisted off on us. In the words of Sir Francis Bacon, "Knowledge is Power." Everything You Should Know About Chelation Therapy gives you the power to determine your own best treatment where it concerns arterial obstruction. Available from Amazon. Betty...

WHAT YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT HYPOTHYROIDISM
Ken Blanchard, M.D., PhD.
Marietta Abrams Brill
A comprehensive guide to hypothyroidism, what it is, its symptoms, what can be done to alleviate them and improve health. Dr Blanchard treats his patients as individuals who often present with gross variations of the classic symptoms. He tailors prescriptions in accordance with the individual patient's needs; his criteria for success being an improvement in the patient's well being and lifestyle, as opposed to simply "going by the book" and writing "cookie cutter" scripts.
Beginning with the difficulties many patients have in finding a doctor who will listen, Dr Blanchard discusses proper testing for hypothyroidism, the brands of thyroid medication, the roles of various conditions, causes, environmental factors, life stages, genetics; even nutrients (such as selenium deficiency), and aspects of life affecting the thyroid and how it works. The book also contains a Glossery and a Resource Section.
COMMENTARY
I found this book provides a useful tool for hypothyroids. the author's viewpoint compliments Mary Shoman's Living Well With Hypothyroidism. I like Dr Blanchard's approach to patients as individuals, since not all hypothyroids respond positively to all treatments, and not all patients have the same symptoms. This book is well written, well organized, highly informative and smooth reading. Buy it from Amazon. Betty...

LIVING WELL WITH HYPOTHYROIDISM
Mary J Shoman
Any review kept to a reasonable length cannot begin to cover the wealth of information included in this book. The author discusses all subjects connected with hypothyroidism, even remotely. Possible symptoms, causes, remedial drugs, alternative solutions, nutritional therapy; are all treated with a conscientious thoroughness not often seen in works of this nature. Mary Shoman discusses recommendations by recognized authorities and experts in the subject together with the ordeals narrated by many sufferers in their own words, with an inclusion of her own experiences. This writer, a fellow sufferer, quotes the trials of others who share this disorder along with opinions and suggestions of doctors who specialize in this field of medicine.
Whole chapters discuss the periferal conditions involved with hypothyroidism, even health problems such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Included on pages 34 & 35 is a complete list of goitrogenic foods (strawberries, for one). Many helpful remedies are included, making this book an unusually good and thorough exploration of the subject.
Resource lists, references, and a glossary offer help for readers looking to get their own hypothyroidism under control.
COMMENTARY
Mary Shoman speaks very knowledgeably about the symptoms of hypothyroidism as a fellow sufferer. She is not a health practitioner, but she has consulted with, and quotes several doctors specializing in hypothyroidism as well as having interviewed innumerable numbers of people concerning their troubles getting diagnosed by unsympathetic doctors who refused to listen while clinging tenaciously to their own narrow and preconceived notions. The number and variety of symptoms and conditions associated with hypothyroidsism are astonishing and it's encouraging to note that many ailments disappear with proper treatment. The book is written in a folksy and conversational tone, making it a pleasant, easy read. Available from Amazon. Betty...

PERFECT WEIGHT AMERICA
Jordan Rubin
with Bernard Bulwer, M.D.
This book ties weight control to overall health. The author's Perfect Weight Program emphasizes healthy eating over fat-diet meals which lead only to short term success with the inevitable return of the lost weight. Rubin's plan involves changing your attitude toward food, changing your lifestyle and including an exercise program. Rubin advocates focusing on whole, real foods rather than processed non-nutritious meals. By avoiding packaged foods, buying locally whenever possible and following the author's suggestions, it is possible to achieve the perfect weight. A big part of the book is devoted to success stories of participants, eating plans, guidelines, resources and products.
COMMENTARY
This book is well written, easily understood, and professionally presented, but there is nothing new or world shaking as far as its ideas are concerned. The overweight and obese will not, for the most part, change their lifestyle and attitudes. The emphasis on fruits and vegetables in the diet is easy in concept, but difficult for many people to sustain even when their health is at stake. Although Mr Rubin is sincere and personable when he discusses the products of his company, the book then becomes a straight advertising piece. Still, the book is worth reading and the successes of the program participants may be a motivational factor. Judge it for yourself if you like, by getting it from Amazon. Betty...

IODINE: WHY YOU NEED IT
David Brownstein, M.D.
Dr David Brownstein, a specialist in iodine therapy, explains how iodine restores health to sufferers of various thyroid disorders, fibrocystic breast tissue, and other autoimmune ailments. Dr Brownstein discusses the connection between iodine deficiency and these health problems and how he goes about treating the illnesses through his protocol of iodine supplementation. Numerous case histories illustrate the validity of his treatments and the cures he effects through their use.
COMMENTARY
This book should be required reading for anyone with thyroid disfunction or other autoimmune disease which iodine might be able to alleviate. "Iodine" contains much valuable information in only 136 well written, easily understood pages. A word of caution: Although someone may be able to carry out iodine therapy without benefit of a doctor, it would be a very good idea to work with a qualified health professional experienced in this type of therapy. DON'T GO TO THE COSMETICS COUNTER WITHOUT ME
Paula Begoun
Paula Begoun, a makeup artist of extensive experience,, has produced an encyclopedia of cosmetic lines and their products, which she rates on several criteria that she details in her Explanation Section. This chapter and the summary of Best Products can be helpful to women seeking suggestions for their skin.
The Cosmetics Ingredients Dictionary defines the terms of ingredients found in individual products and tells us which ones are effective and which ones don't work.
That said, her protocols and viewpoints on obtaining and maintaining healthy skin are not to be followed blindly; nor should her product evaluations. Many aspects of this book are personal and unscientific and are to be considered as suggestions from an experienced practitioner only.
The "Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary" on the other hand, is extremely valuable for definitions of terms that appear in cosmetics. Whether or not these ingredients work in skin products is questionable for a number of reasons. Also, a major distraction from an otherwise excellent resource is the painfully detailed inclusion of the author's own product line, all of which naturally recieve her highest rating.
COMMENTARY
This book practically begs for debate. There must be as many opinions on the "best" cosmetic products as there are users. As an example, the author is at best, neutral about Aveeno Moisturizing Bar, which was prescribed for me by my doctor years ago and I've been an enthusiastic user of it ever since. And I've also used both mineral oil and petrolatum as lubricants since childhood and here the author concedes their usefulness.
Following the author's lead through the manufacturers and their various products, I picked up knowledge I hadn't even thought about before. The Dictionary too, was helpful in clarifying some of the terminology of the inndustry
Judging by this book, the entire field of skin care and cosmetics is frought with controversy, containing more questions than answers. The many variants in individual skin make product choices a matter of taste. In other words, what you like is what you'll buy, no matter what you hear. A fascinating subject, and a provocative book. I enjoyed reading it, I think you will too. Get it from AMAZON. Betty...

PETSPEAK
by the Editors of PETS REVIEW
"Petspeak" is required reading for all pet owners; those considering that special kitty or pooch, or animal lovers in general who want to learn more about dogs and cats. The book gives a complete course on dog and cat "talk" from the first ear twitch to the last tail wag of their body language.; to the meaning of each WOOF and MEOW. {Chapter 72 describes a dog trait that drives us all crazy.)
Read this book to learn why dogs and cats do the things they do. This knowledge helps pet owners learn how best to train their dog or cat for everyon's mutual benefit. And the real-life vignettes recount some amusing situations involving dogs and cats.
COMMENTARY
I wish I'd had this book when my first pet, a cat thrown out by her owner, appeared on my doorstep. Since then I have acquired many more pets, all of whom have proved better at teaching me how to serve them than I will ever be at "dog" or "cat." This is a wonderful, heart warming book, and the only disappointment I experienced with reading it is its abrupt ending. The absence of a concluding chapter leaves the reader hanging and waiting for more. If you have a dog or cat, you owe it to yourself to read this book. AMAZON has it, of course. Betty...

CANCER: STEP OUTSIDE THE BOX
Ty M Bollinger
Ty Bollinger contends that conventional medicine works well for medical crises such as accidents and other emergency situations, but cannot work effectively against cancer because cancer, he correctly asserts, is a systemic disease. Conventional medicine focuses on tumor suppression through surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy procedures which remove tumors but fail to cure the cancer. Following these inadequate and debilitating protocols, the patient is often sent home to die.
Normally, cells breath oxygen by aerobic respiration. When the normally alkaline body becomes acidic, normal cells begin fermenting glucose and cease breathing oxygen; breathing anaerobically and turning to cancer cells. Then tumors form, enclosing these cancer cells. Fed by new blood vessels formed by angiogenisis, These cancer cells do nothing except sicken the patient and refuse to die.
Bollinger cites several doctors and researchers whose alternative treatments target cancer cells, killing them without harm to healthy cells. Such treatments starve the blood vessels feeding the cancer cells, which then die. Thus alternative medicine cures a cancerous condition by helping the patient to restore his body to its original alkaline state. Various diets and protocols are outlined in the book to help the patient.
In succeeding chapters, Bollinger discusses various cancer causes; environmental pollutants, dietary and other lifestyle practices including foods and activities to avoid. (See my discussion of breast cancer) Bollinger is obviously quite religious and his conclusion of the book deals extensively with spiritual healing.
COMMENTARY
This book, written in layman's language, was inspired by the deaths from cancer of many close family members including both parents. The diets, supplements, and protocols are clearly explained and easily understood. The emphasis on fresh raw fruits and vegetables is nothing new, except perhaps for the discussion of their enzyme content. I found his new points on melatonin and Vitamin D quite interesting. I found some enlightening information on the reasons to avoid certain foods. Soy, for example, is not the miraculous, nutritious food we have been led to believe. Soy beans, instead, are said to be downright unhealthful, even poisonous, and this book has me convinced.
My personal thoughts that kept cropping up as I read the book is that perhaps it would be unwise of anyone with cancer to try dealing with this devastating disease by himself, and as if to anticipate this comment, the author has thoughtfully provided a list of alternative cancer clinics. (Our visitors can get additional information by contacting Lequadrillage.) I put this book down convinced of the utter sincerity of Ty Bollinger in his desire to help cancer patients get cured. That sincerity pervades the entire book. READ IT! Available from Amazon.

CHEF MD'S BIG BOOK OF CULINARY MEDICINE
John La Puma MD
Chef MD, a cable television cooking show, features John La Puma, a doctor of medicine and also a professional chef, who offers proper nutrition as the key to health. Dr La Puma's premise is that the standard American diet (SAD) of fast food, sodas, donuts and the like does nothing positive for our health. Therefore he directs the reader to the "Chef MD way" of eating.
If food is medicine, then the kitchen pantry is the medicine cabinet stocked with healthful, tasty ingredients with which to create delicious satisfying meals enjoyed by all five senses. This is to preclude the eat-anything-on-the-run fast food diet which is the source of the majority of our health problems. Recipes, planned meals, little known food facts, preparation instructions, a table of food sources for vitamins and minerals, even an "Eight Week Program for Optimal Health'" fill the "Big Book."
Included is a section on common health problems from acne to ulcerative colitis and what to eat for each ailment. If you follow the suggestions in the book, you will be leading the Chef MD wayof life.
COMMENTARY
This is most definitely not your average diet book which poses restrictive diets you can't wait to get off once you've reached your goals! The result of course is that inevitably, the weight comes back. The Big Book is a refreshing and welcome approach to gourmet meals which contribute greatly to good health along with culinary delights. Obviously, Dr La Puma likes to cook, and he also likes to eat. The text of the book is entertaining and informative, especially the food facts in the margins under the titles "Little Bites," "The Skinny on...," and "Doctor it Up!" The table "Good Food Sources of Vitamins and Minerals" gives a lot of good tips on planning meals around nutritional needs. A minor detraction I found is his reference to General Mills Cereals, which to me, suggest a sponsor, since in my book, these cereals are essentially worthless with a super abundance of sugar in overprocessed grains. This is a minor point though, and does nothing to detract from the value of thebook.
The star of the book is Chapter 5, "Recipes and Meals," definitely not ladies' magazines usual offerings. I can't wait to try the Broccoli, Cheese, and Kalamata Olive Pizza!" on page 101. Get if from Amazon. Betty...

COMMENTARY
After reading this book you will be convinced that enzyme therapy is a safe and effective alternative to the less than desireable prescription drugs that continue to be foisted off on us all with such wild abandon. The downside of course is that enzyme therapy takes time to work, as do all natural cures and therapies. Dr Cichoke does for enzymes what others have done for vitamins and minerals. Dr Cichoke offers the knowledge you need to cure a chronic illness through the appropriate use of enzymes. Available from Amazon, of course. Betty
CANCER - CURING THE INCURABLE
A True Story
Dr William Donald Kelley DDS, MS
- Do you have late stage cancer?
- Have you been through surgery, radiation, chemo?
- Have the treatments failed?
- Have you been sent home to die?
- Do you know that only 3% to 20% of cancer patients are helped by the standard treatments?
- Do you know what really killscancer patients? No, it's not cancer! Find the answer at the end of this review..
In 1967, at age 45, Dr Kelley was diagnosed with late stage liver, pancreatic, and intestinal cancer. He had been studying cancer for a long time, never dreaming it could happen to him. This book is his story - an epic of surviving the unsurvivable. He recounts that:
- First he had severe mental depression.
- His vision became badly blurred.
- His doctor told him it was all in his head.
- Finally, his doctor took his health problems seriously and investigated.
- Then his doctor gave him 18 months to live - maximum.
Dr Kelly was too weak to have surgery. All he could do was regulate his diet. So he -
- Worked out the relationships between enzymes, co-enzymes, minerals, and the whole detoxification process, knowing that he needed to get the poisons out of his body.
- The right foods allowed his body's defenses to function.
- The wrong foods helped the malignancies to grow.
Meanwhile...
- The cancer made him constantly nauseous.
- He suffered non-stop agony in his intestines.
- His damaged pancreas drove him into insulin shock several times each day.
- The cancer, having eaten into the nerve connections to his heart enhanced his journey into pain.
The recovery process was even worse than the disease. He began winning his battle, but not without cost. As his body began absorbing the dying cancer cells -
- He felt contantly sick.
- His blood and liver became overloaded with toxims from the dying cancer cells.
- He was depressed without let up.
- The diet left him with powerful cravings for the "junk food" he had been accustomed to eat.
- He developed painful muscle cramps from lost muscle protien.
- His recovery was a nine month roller coaster ride, feeling good one day, only to relapse into pain and discomfort again the next.
- Then, slowly, he began feeling better.
- The healing process took five years.
Afterwards, Dr Kelly went on with his life feeling fine until his death (not of cancer) in 2005 at the age of 83, meanwhile helping many others conquer this devastating disease. Get the book at Amazon.
COMMENTARY
We all have the spectre of cancer looming over us and we all owe it to ourselves to be as informed as we can possibly be with regard to avoidance, and if necessary, cure. Dr Kelley rambles a lot in his account of the ordeal he underwent, but the information he imparts is of immeasurable value to all of us. Read this book!
Dr Nicholas Gonzales continues to treat cancer patients using Dr Kelley's methods in his New York clinic and you can find his address on the Lequadrillage Alternative Provider page. What do cancer patients really die of? Answer: 1: Starvation, 2: Toxin Overload.
By the way, you're not limited to Dr Gonzales for very effective cancer treatment. On our Alternative Providers page you will find a number of physicians who successfully treat cancer without resorting to the traditional cut, burn, and poison protocols practiced by their more commercially minded peers. If you don't find a physician in your area, ASK US. WE CAN PROBABLY DIRECT YOU. LeQuadrillage
