Over the past few months I've received a lot of inquiries regarding  Osteoporosis and what can be done about it, short of the usual dangerous drug routine.  Our staff did a lot of research on the subject and we all harassed our cadre of experts for answers.  I do believe we've been able to come up with some good answers.  Some have been written up extensively, others have never been touched on.

Of all the books we've reviewed on the subject, and there are a whole lot of them, one clearly stands out among all the rest.  That's because all the others reference  Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis, by Alan R Gaby MD.

There are other good books around of course, and if you'd prefer to download one to your computer immediately, you might check in our bookstore..

Before I go into a detailed review of Dr Gaby's book,  I'd like to share with you the short story of a woman who actually conquered this devastating ailment of Osteoporosis.  This woman, extremely intelligent, well educated, and savvy in the ways of the world and the business side of the medical profession recounts here her own words:

""You have thin bones.  You have osteoporosis."  Those words gave me a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.  How could this be happening to me?  I take supplements.  I exercise every day.  My head was reeling as I digested my doctor's words.  He merely shrugged and added that testing OK for calcium still meant I needed medication.  All the while he was writing a prescription for a 70 milligram weekly dose of  Fosamax.  When I asked him how he arrived at the dosage he confessed that he'd gotten it from a book.  I know this book.  It's called The Physician's Desk Reference and it's de rigeur in every doctor's office.  Most of us get treated within the pages of this book!   It's don't think, just write the script as recommended.

Well, like a little sheep, I dutifully took the script to the pharmacy and filled it.  Then I went home and took a look at the information sheet that came with the prescription, noting all the caveats and warnings, then promptly without any further thought, threw the whole seventy bucks worth of stuff down the toilet!

I knew I needed my own Desk Reference.  An inquiry to LeQuadrillage led me to Dr Gaby's book.    I'm getting better daily.  My bone mass is increasing noticeably."

PREVENTING AND REVERSING OSTEOPOROSIS
Alan R Gaby MD

  • Diagnosed with thin bones, osteopenia, or osteoporosis?
  • Worried about bone fractures?
  • Looking for anwers from a "neutral" professional?
  • Want understandable language?

This book is your answer.  Dr Gaby has been treating women with osteoporosis for many years.  His success has been astonishing, to the dismay of a lot of his more profit oriented peers.

Dr Gaby will tell you that bone remodeling is a natural process of breakdown and rebuilding.  Certain factors in your life affect this process: Here are some of the questions Dr Gaby answers:

  •  What do excess alcohol, caffeine, salt, sugar have to do with bone loss?
  • What makes bones break down and fail?  It's not necessarily aging!
  • How does modern living rob your bones of nutrients?
  • Which events stop you from absorbing certain nutrients?

Dr Gaby goes on to discuss...

  • Modern farming methods and their effects on the food we eat.
  • Harmful food additives
  • Food processing in factories
  • What heavy metals do to your bones.

Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis tells you how to protect your bones from harmful elements. It's more than Vitamin D and Calcium.  And the answer does not lay in Boniva, or Fosamax or any other prescription medicine.  Dr Gaby's book will tell you about...

  • The vitamins and minerals you need and why you need them.
  • All the appropriate supplements and what they will do for you and how to take them.
  • Why you need every single nutrient in the book.
  • Why you need to take most supplements with food.
  • Why you absolutely need stomach acid and why you must not suppress it.
  • A mineral you've probably never heard of that works like a prescription drug - without the side effects.
  • The problems caused by excess calcium and how to avoid them.

Better than anyone else, Dr Gaby shows you how to fight osteoporosis and win!  His method works for all his own patients.  It can work for you too.  Get this book!  Get Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis and stop osteoporosis in its tracks!  Click on the banner at the top of this page.   Get well - Betty.

While Fosamax may help to prevent a loss of bone density, it also inhibits the growth of new bone.  If you're taking Fosamax you might want to give it another look,  You can start by reviewing what other users are experiencing.  You can access a very good forum of Fosamax users by clicking here.

JUST OUT!

The latest research findings on bisphosphonates (Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel, and Reclast) indicate a strong increase in the odds of those taking these drugs to develop atrial fibrillation,  This is an erratic and sometimes life threatening heart rhythm that sometimes produces blood clots, among other complications.  Of course our sterling FDA has done nothing to advise doctors to stop prescribing these dangerous drugs.

Bad news from the results of a dual-energy absorptiometry x-ray (DXA) can disconcert anyone.  Don't panic.  You don't need to rely totally on Big Pharma's expensive, dangerous, and questionable meds to improve your bone density and strength.  Also, Osteoporosis is far from exclusively a woman's problem.  About two million American men also have it.  As in women, small boned, thin men are most at risk, especially if they have a history of fractures, or calcium or vitamin D deficiencies.

An outstanding alternative to Fosamax or any other prescription drug used to prevent bone loss is readily available.  Get the information here.
Additionally, we highly recommend using regularly (and all of us at Lequadrillage do this),  Total Balance for Women or  Total Balance for Men.

UNDERSTANDING THE DEXA SCAN
Is the DEXA SCAN worth having?  Does it give an accurate picture?

A TRUE STORY

In May of 2004, the 77 year old mother of one of our staff had a DEXA Scan.  The results came back showing severe thinning of her bones, especially in the hips and thighs.  She was termed as being at great risk for breaks and fractures.  Any mainstream physician would have written her a script for Fosamax without a second thought.

Instead, her alternative provider started her on a regimen of improved nutrition and daily intake of strontium, the bone maker.  In addition, she was instructed to take the supplements Total Balance for Women along with Bone-Protec daily as recommended on the labels.  No prescriptions were required or issued.

She followed these instructions faithfully in the ensuing years.  One evening in February 2010, on her way up to bed, she lost her footing at the top of their winding staircase.  Head over heels she tumbled down the entire flight of  hardwood steps, landing hard on the quarry tile floor below.  She was dazed, bruised, cut , and disoriented, with a severe gash in her scalp.  The family of course was horrified,  expecting the worst.  An ambulance was called and she was transported to the ER.

She required six stitches in her scalp. No broken bones were found!    She was kept in the hospital under observation for three days.  By then she was clamoring for release and no one could think of any more reasons for keeping her there.  She's back home again in robust good health, and taking a little salt in her food now - this was the reason for her fall.  She'd been a fanatic about avoiding all salt (we do all need a little) and she'd passed out momentarily at the head of the stairway.  For a good source of  Strontium,  click on the bottle.

THE STRONTIUM STORY IN BRIEF
Why Every Post Menopausal Woman Should Take It

Exactly 100 years ago, a German scientist found that strontium (not to be confused with strontium 90, the radioactive isotope), one of the most abundant minerals on our planet, was uniquely effective in stimulating rapid bone formation. Ten years later, another German researcher concluded that, while calcium itself was effective in mineralizing bone, its effectiveness was magnified exponentially when combined with this particular mineral.

It took until 1952 for these data to be carried forward. Then, a Cornell University research report confirmed the earlier findings. In 1959, the Mayo Clinic achieved astonishingly good results in applying this research to patients with severe osteoporosis, and in 1986 a comprehensive and detailed report appeared confirming strontium's effectiveness at building bone and bone density.

Sadly, all of this research was ignored until about five years ago when suddenly, there was an almost explosive growth of interest in this mineral. Since then, more than 400 peer reviewed articles have been published confirming the near miraculous effects of strontium.

Strontium, chemically similar to calcium, and absorbed in relatively similar amounts, is found in soil, air, water, fish, and nearly all plants. It is the most abundant mineral in seawater. We all normally consume one to five milligrams of this mineral daily without ever being aware of it.

Now pure strontium is chemically unstable, but as found in nature, this mineral is never pure. In general, it is found as strontium carbonate, strontium citrate, and strontium gluconate, among other compounds.

Our bodies have two opposing forces at work. The builders and the destroyers. This is normal and vital to living, but when the destroyer begins to dominate, we run into trouble. That is what happens in osteoporosis. Here we have a developing dominance of the osteoclasts, the cells that break bone down, over the osteoblasts, the cells that build bone up. And as discovered a century ago, strontium and calcium, working together, form a powerful weapon against osteoporosis, with a combined effect of slowing the development of osteoclasts and accelerating the development of their beneficial adversaries, the osteoblasts.

Big Pharma, never to be upstaged by nature, has been working feverishly to develop a product thay can patent. What they've come up with is a compound they call strontium ranelate. This is nothing more than natural strontium combined with a synthetic compound called ranelic acid, which doesn't do a whole lot more than make a patentable product. There have been a couple of very well conducted studies on its effects. They showed very positive results from the use of this patented product, but nothing superior to the natural minerals properly used. But the heavy hitters in this field are still the big money makers the pharmaceuticals are foisting off on us in the form of intensely marketed bisphosphonate drugs. They don't work nearly as well as plain old natural strontium and calcium, taken together in relatively equal amounts, and they are getting notorious for producing some horrendous side effects.

The March 2010 Journal of Bone Mineral Research warns that the anti-osteoporosis drugs; the bisphosphonate drugs, suppress the ability of strontium to help rebuild bone - simply because these drugs essentially kill the bone in the first place. However, when a woman stops taking these patent medications, bone remodeling can commence again after a period of at least six months has elapsed.

Another study conducted in the United Kingdom clearly shows the superiority of natural strontium and calcium combinations to the currently overhyped patent medicines, while leaving in question the length of time it will take for bone remodeling to resume after a patient has stopped taking bisphosphonate drugs and begun to substitute a regimen of calcium and natural strontium.

Based on all the recent studies conducted on this subject, it would really seem natural to conclude that this mineral combination is an absolute must have for every post menopausal woman.

For those who want to begin taking these natural products for themselves, current research seems to indicate that 340 to 680 milligrams of elemental strontium provides the best results. It is very very important to take at least an equal amount of calcium along with this mineral, and ideally the amount of calcium taken should exceed the strontium intake. And another important consideration: Calcium and Strontium should not be taken at the same time.  At least three hours should elapse between them.
